The Unquiet Grave served all funeral doom tonight, starting with some noteworthy precursors, stopping by some important locales in the development of the subgenre, and then listening to some more current examples of the style. This was two hours of some of the longest songs ever played on this show, each one of them mind-numbingly slow and atmospheric, and many of them pipe organ-y.

Tonight I was THRILLED to bring two hours of Carcass worship to the airwaves! In this episode, we listened to tracks from each Carcass LP in order, as well as some rarities, demos, live stuff, remixes, etc., before listening to some of the best Carcass-influenced bands (and there sure are a ton). Tonight we enjoyed two solid hours of Floridian DM, listening to everything from the Big Four of Florida death metal (Death, Obituary, Deicide, Morbid Angel), to the proggier acts in there (Cynic, Atheist), slightly lesser-known faves (Solstice, Massacre, Monstrosity), and even people who started out in Florida but eventually moved somewhere else, ergo men will love to tweet at me about it (Acheron)

Tonight on The Unquiet Grave we listened to all Norwegian Black Metal, trve and perhaps also a little bit of un-trve. So much is written and said about this richly-storied genre, so tonight I’m taking it easy on the talking so we can just listen to the tunes. Tonight’s episode was all Cascadian Black Metal — a term that, honestly, mostly music journalists use, and that loosely denotes atmospheric black metal bands from the Pacific Northwest who talk about nature. We’re starting off with CBM kings Wolves in the Throne Room and Agalloch, and getting a little more obscure as we go. Maybe I chose this theme for tonight because I’m excited about spending some time in the woods this weekend at Shadow Woods Metal Fest. If you’re there too, say hi.

Tonight we listened to new (NEW, not nü-) metal released in the last month or so. Tonight’s episode of The Unquiet Grave featured the lineup of Shadow Woods Metal Fest 2021, including Panopticon, Voarm, Falls of Rauros, Feminazgul, Darsombra, and more. I’m perhaps a little overly stoked, following a year of isolation and dread, for heavy metal summer camp this year. Tonight’s episode of The Unquiet Grave was all about Les Légions Noires, or L.L.N., or the Black Legions as they’re variously called — a small, extremely insular circle of black metal musicians in France, mostly around the city of Brest, in the early to mid 90s.
